Surprise!
I love my buddy Wade! He's my best friend, best roommate, and soon-to-be best League of Legends duo (sorry bro). With his birthday coming up, I wanted to do something really special for him, because he's just a special guy. As I was coming up with ideas on what to do for him, his partner, Sam, beat me to the punch and texted me asking if I could help throw a party for him. Relieved that I wasn't alone in planning something for him, I happily accepted, and we began to plot a secret surprise party for Wade, with him none the wiser.
The fun part of planning a party for Wade with Sam is that we're fairly different people. Beyond having different types of relationships with Wade, we simply represent two different sides of Wade, and so, we had a few funny moments where we realized how different we were... Regardless, we pushed our differences aside for the sake of our shared vestment in Wade and we continued with the party preparations. Sam was dealing with the brunt of the responsibility, ordering a custom birthday cake for Wade and securing their apartment for the party. However, I could argue I had a task of similar difficulty: organizing a bunch of guys to be somewhere at a specific time. Luckily, I was able to secure a good time for everyone to show up, along with bringing some refreshments to the party, and so I felt pretty good about the party's attendance numbers.
The preparations weren't finished, however. Apparently there's more to a party than friends, drinks, and cake? Early on the morning of Wade's birthday, Sam and I met up and drove to a few supply stores to buy all the little things that make a party just a little bit better: balloons, themed plates and forks, streamers and so on. Maybe I'm just not great at throwing parties, but luckily Sam was there to keep what we bought on-theme and not random junk. After finishing up at a few stores, Sam dropped me off back at our apartment, with Wade still peacefully sleeping in on the morning of his birthday.
In order to keep the party a proper secret, we had scheduled it for the day after Wade's actual birthday, in order to not raise suspicion if we were both claiming to be busy during a certain part of the day. We had a nice lunch and dinner together, and our college football team won their first game of the season (about time).
The day of the party was stressful- Wade was seemingly always with me, so I couldn't sneak out to help set up the party. Under the excuse of going bowling with the boys, I left the apartment and hopped into Sam's waiting car, ready to speed to the party venue to set up before guests arrived. After an hour of furious balloon-blowing, streamer-setting action, the first guests began to arrive, and soon enough, the apartment was filled with eager friends waiting for the guest of honor to arrive.
The video speaks for itself. Happy Birthday Wade, I hope you know now how many people care about you :)
It was a very sweet endeavor, and I appreciate you and what you do (and that's not even in reference to throwing a surprise party, you're just chill like that sometimes)
