Now Spell: BLOG (Pt.1)

Hello! Though it won't be noticeable through my activity on this blog, I was actually very busy this week working on another very important writing project: my first serious short film script! Though I have technically written a script for my AICE Media A class, it was littered with mistakes and overall does not represent the actual potential of my screenwriting capabilities, in my opinion. This isn't to say it's a horrible script, I actually watched it earlier today with Wade (since he's staying over at the moment) and thought that the jokes were tight, the characters were distinct and well-developed, and the overall themes/message of the short film were pretty clear!

Regardless, I still didn't feel like it should be considered my first screenplay. There were too many creative restraints on COMPUTER FUNERAL (for example, the fact I had to actually film the thing for my class), as well as not fully delivering on my ideas for the short film due to time limits on how long the end product would end up being.

Fast forward nearly a year later, and I have a dream the morning before a big psychology exam. Though I didn't give it much thought at the time, I ended up remembering parts of it later that day as I waited for Martina to show up to the library for our study session. While I waited for them, I scribbled bits and pieces of the story and concept I remembered from my dream, which ended up being the seeds for what would eventually become NOW SPELL.

Despite having a pretty cool idea for a story, I just didn't have the time, resources, or motivation to sit down and write a script just at that moment. College exam season was just around the corner, and since I would be travelling most of April and moving out in early May, writing it while I was at college was out of the question.

This didn't stop it from brewing passively in my mind during those months. Over time, I would slowly add little ideas or concepts into my journal to keep track of things I wanted to add to the script, and I would also pitch the story to my close friends at the time.

Finally, after having moved back in with my parents for a week, I remembered that I had wanted to write a short film script. Even more pressingly, Wade had mentioned and recommended me to a short film writing contest that I aimed to submit my script to. The only issue: the deadline for submissions was a week away.

For the last week, I have been drafting, developing, and editing the official script for NOW SPELL: first jotting down the general flow of the story in my journal, then writing my first draft on the computer, and finally revising the script after having Wade proofread the draft. And in record time, I had written my first short film script in under a week. After years stewing on different ideas and giving up on potential projects, I pushed myself to speedrun the entire process in just about a week.

Deadlines work miracles.

Due to time constraints, I'm breaking up this blog into two: one covering my production/writing process (this one) and another blog covering the actual content of the script, what ideas and inspirations I took from, and essentially walking through a commentary of the creative side of the project (which should be the next blog I write, coming up later this week).

NOW SPELL: BLOG Pt. 2 will be linked here!
