NEW SCRIPT IDEA ALERT!!!
This is going to be a shorter post since I'm only sharing the beginnings of an idea I had for my next major writing project. I'm also just excited!! After finishing and submitting NOW SPELL to several competitions, I've lowkey felt a hunger for that kind of grind again: the week of scriptwriting, editing, and on-the-minute changes that I got to experience working on a project with a clear goal, a clear deadline, and a solid vision.
But here's the problem: I had no other ideas on what to write about! While I finally found a creative spark I could harness into actual writing, I had somehow lost the flow of random ideas for scripts that I've had for years, but never felt strongly enough to follow through on. At least, it was this way for a month or two, until the last day of my trip to Argentina. In a somewhat inconvenient setting, inspiration had struck me like a bag of bricks, and I knew I had mere minutes before the idea faded away. So I politely excused myself from the dinner table, made my way into the cramped bathroom, and recorded about 8 minutes of voice memos that I sent to my buddy Wade, both as a cheap way to store my raw thoughts for later and as a way to get some feedback on the concept. After the bathroom, I stepped into the kitchen with my cousin Nico, explained my idea, and he really liked it!!
But what exactly was my big idea? Well, for some reason I was thinking about time-loop movies (like Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day, Naked, etc.) and how it would probably be fun to write a script in that genre. But the issue with that is that the genre is relatively exhausted: everyone knows the general idea and pattern that these movies follow. So how would I subvert the idea of a time loop movie in a way that keeps the central gimmick of the genre while having a new, fresh twist on the concept that will draw in audiences already familiar with time-loop movies? Then I thought: What if we saw a time-loop movie, but from the perspective of someone outside of the time-loop?
From there, the idea was born: An action-comedy movie about a normal guy who sees another guy doing everything perfectly, as if rehearsed a million times, and decides to follow this guy around out of curiosity, eventually realizing that he is experiencing the day for the 500th time. However, towards the end of the film, the Looper realizes he needs to kill the non-Looper in order to break free of his curse. This leads to a chaotic fight/chase segment that ends with.... I'm not sure yet. I have a few more ideas attached to this story, but for now, this is the most I can share. Stay tuned for more info!
